Week Ten Reading
While reading this week’s reading titled: “Walking and Talking Geography: A Small-World Approach” I was taken back to my high school days when my class did the only exciting activity in a world geography class, and the word exciting is used very loosely. Personally speaking, I am not the best at geography in general, so I completely agree with the reading.
“First-through-third graders are not ready developmentally to learn how to identify species of animals living in a rain forest or to color code Earth’s five oceans and seven continents.”
I remember that all this information had to be crammed to me at a young age with honestly confused me completely. Now that is not to say that I am completely clueless in regards to geography. The lesson provided in this reading is good approach to have students engage and at the same time learn about their surrounds. Pretty sure this lesson was intended for younger students but again I did this assignment while in high school during my freshman year. Part of the reason that this assignment had to be completed was because just as for myself, many of my peers were not prepared from geography. It was a smart call from our teacher then to take it way back to an elementary level thinking for us to be more comfortable.
(Although this is not an exact match of my own map in high school, this is practically how mines was designed.)
