Week Four Reading
“One year my students were investigating where racism came from, where people got the crazy idea that Whites were better than Blacks, and why anyone else believed it.”
Where does racism come from? Where do people actually get the crazy idea that Whites were better than Blacks? Why DOES anyone believe it? This weeks reading, Teaching history so children will care, really made me think about an experiment conducted years ago but that still plays an important debate today. Kenneth Bancroft Clark and Mamie Phipps Clark were African-American psychologists who as a married team conducted research among children and were active in the Civil Rights Movement. The "doll test" is a psychological experiment designed in the 1940s in the USA to test the degree of marginalization felt by African American children caused by prejudice, discrimination and racial segregation. This video shows exactly what this weeks reading deals with why it is important to teach history so our students could care or at least be aware of the history to be able to share it out. These young children have not yet live enough to know exactly why White or Black is bad or good. They just do as they are told.
