Week Five Reading
Now, I am not much of a history person to begin with but I do know that Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, all thanks to the Kellogg’s commercial that would air a few years back. That is practically all I knew about or even dealing with Christopher Columbus. Ever since I could remember, up until maybe high school quite possibly early college years, I always “knew” Christopher Columbus was a good guy. Well maybe not a good guy but I certainly did not know all the horrifying things that I now know about him thanks to this weeks reading: Chapter 1 - Columbus and the Indians.
When I was younger, if anyone where to ask me what year did Christopher Columbus sail the ocean blue, I would automatically know the answer. If anything else was asked by him, I would most certainly NOT know the answer, well besides the fact that we also had a free day off from school because of him on Columbus day. Like who in their right mind would think that Christopher Columbus was actually a bad guy? He had a whole day dedicated to him! Captain Hook didn’t have his own day, nor did Cruella de Vil, of course in a young person’s mind.
Christopher Columbus’ story was nowhere near close to to who I thought he actually was. In all honesty, I just knew kind of that he was the first to discover America, but then I clearly remember a conversation/debate a couple of friends were having that he in fact was not this good guy as everyone portrayed him to be. But now, it was like a slap in the face because all was not like it seemed. In fact, my thoughts of him were completely tippled in a sense like the actual truth about some things is just very horrifying.
